Ad blocker app for iPhone and Android: block ads on your phone with DNS

EZOBLOCKER is a DNS ad blocker app for iPhone and Android. Your phone sends its DNS lookups, encrypted, to our servers, where the ad addresses on our lists are blocked before they load. This removes many ads in browsers and apps, but not ads that are served from the same address as the content.

How does a DNS ad blocker work?

Before an ad can appear, your phone has to look up the address of the server that holds it. EZOBLOCKER sends that lookup, encrypted, to our servers and compares it with the lists of the categories you switched on. If the address is on the Ads list, the lookup gets no usable answer, so the ad does not load and often leaves an empty space.

Because this happens on our servers, there is no huge list stored on your phone, and the pages you open do not pass through us. Only the small DNS lookup does.

How do I block ads on my phone?

  1. Install EZOBLOCKER from the App Store or Google Play.
  2. Open the app and make sure the Ads category is on. You can add Trackers and Security next to it.
  3. Accept the system's VPN prompt. The app uses it to catch DNS lookups only.
  4. Tap connect.

Changes take effect in about 30 seconds. If an app that was already open still shows ads, close it and open it again, because the phone remembers addresses for a short while.

What does it block?

The Ads category is built on the HaGeZi Multi PRO list, an open list of advertising and tracking domains. The separate Trackers category covers background data collection by platforms and device makers. Both are lists, so the wording matters: EZOBLOCKER blocks the ad and tracker addresses on its lists, not ads in general.

The lists refresh every 6 hours. You can see each source and the current domain count on the blocklists page.

Why do I still see some ads?

Most apps and sites serve ads from separate ad addresses, and those disappear. Some ads come from the same address as the content itself. Video ads inside video apps, sponsored posts in social feeds and some in-game or in-app ads fall into this group. Blocking that address would break the app too, so DNS can't remove them and we don't promise it.

The limits page lists these cases in full so you know what to expect.

Can I allow or block a site myself?

Yes. My list has two lists, Blocked and Allowed, with up to 250 addresses each. The decision is made on our server before the categories, and subdomains follow the same rule: add example.com and www.example.com is covered too.

If something is blocked by mistake, the Blocked screen shows what was stopped. Tap Open next to the address and it loads. That screen is stored only on your phone, and you choose how long it is kept: off, 24 hours or 7 days.

What if I need ads off the list for a few minutes?

Use Pause on the home screen. You can pause protection for 5 minutes, 30 minutes or 1 hour, and the filter comes back by itself when the time is up. This also helps with hotel or cafe Wi-Fi login pages, which sometimes don't open while a filter is on.

Is it a VPN, and will it affect my connection?

The app uses the phone's VPN setting only to send DNS lookups to our servers. It doesn't hide your IP address or change your location, and your other traffic doesn't pass through us. Pages and videos load directly from their own servers, and a blocked ad simply doesn't load.

A phone can run only one VPN at a time. If you turn on another VPN, EZOBLOCKER stops until you turn it back on.

Does it work on iPhone and Android?

Yes, on both. The setup is the same. On Android there is one extra option, Apps outside the filter, which lets you leave chosen apps out. Apps you leave out can show ads and blocked sites again. On Android also check that the phone's own Private DNS setting is Off or Automatic, because a fixed address there overrides the filter.

To see whether your phone is filtered right now, run the protection check. For the wider picture of changing DNS safely, read the DNS changer page.

Questions people ask

Which list does EZOBLOCKER use to block ads?

The Ads category uses the HaGeZi Multi PRO list. Our servers refresh the lists every 6 hours, and the blocklists page shows the sources and the current number of domains.

Does it block ads inside YouTube videos?

No. Video ads inside video apps come from the same address as the videos, so DNS can't separate them. Ads on websites and in many apps that load from ad servers on our lists are blocked.

Do I need a browser extension?

No. EZOBLOCKER works at the DNS level for the whole phone, so you don't install anything in each browser.

What if a site breaks because of ad blocking?

Open the Blocked screen, find the address and tap Open, or add it to the Allowed list in My list. You can also use Pause for a few minutes or switch the Ads category off.
