How to block adult content and porn sites on your phone

To block adult sites on your phone, install EZOBLOCKER and switch on the Adult content category. Your phone sends its DNS lookups, encrypted, to our servers, which stop explicit sites on our lists before the page loads, in browsers and apps on iPhone and Android.

How do I block adult sites on my phone?

  1. Install EZOBLOCKER from the App Store or Google Play.
  2. Open the app and switch on the Adult content category, described in the app as "Explicit content sites".
  3. Accept the system's VPN prompt. The app uses it only to catch DNS lookups.
  4. Tap connect.

Changes take effect in about 30 seconds. A blocked address simply doesn't load. If an app or browser tab was already open, close it and open it again.

How does DNS blocking of adult sites work?

Every site starts with a DNS lookup, where your phone asks where the site lives. EZOBLOCKER sends that question, encrypted, to our servers and compares it with the lists of the categories you switched on. If the address is on the Adult content lists, the lookup gets no usable answer and the page does not load.

The lists stay on our servers and refresh every 6 hours. Only DNS lookups reach us, and pages and videos load directly from their own servers when they are allowed.

What does the Adult content category cover?

Explicit sites listed in three open lists: HaGeZi NSFW, OISD NSFW and the Block List Project Porn list. It works across browsers and apps because the decision is made at the lookup, not inside each app. See each source on the blocklists page.

No list is complete, and new sites appear. If you find an address that gets through, add it to the Blocked list in My list, which takes up to 250 addresses. Subdomains follow the same rule, so adding example.com also covers www.example.com.

How do I set this up on a child's phone?

Switching the category on is the first step. The second is to stop it from being switched off.

  • Turn on Family lock and choose a 6-digit PIN. Turning protection off or changing categories then needs the PIN.
  • Pick what happens if our servers can't be reached. The basic family filter option keeps adult and harmful sites blocked while the internet keeps working.
  • Consider adding Also block bypass tools in the Family lock setup, so VPNs and similar tools that get around protection are blocked too.

On iPhone, Screen Time can stop the app from being deleted. On Android, the Always-on VPN setting brings protection back by itself. The parental control page walks through all of it.

Can I allow one site that was blocked by mistake?

Yes. The Blocked screen lists what was stopped. Tap Open next to the address, or add it to the Allowed list in My list. The Allowed list is checked before the categories, so it wins over them. With Family lock on, the PIN is needed to open the app first.

The Blocked screen is stored only on your phone. You choose how long it keeps entries: off, 24 hours or 7 days.

What can DNS blocking not do about adult content?

Be realistic about the boundary:

  • It blocks addresses. It does not read the pictures or text on a page you are allowed to open.
  • Social media apps and sites can show adult posts in a feed. The Social media category can block those sites, and messaging apps keep working, but allowed feeds stay allowed.
  • Apps that use their own encrypted DNS or fixed IP addresses can skip a DNS filter. The Bypass tools category blocks well-known providers of that kind.
  • On Android, the phone's own Private DNS setting overrides the filter when it holds a fixed address. Keep it on Off or Automatic.
  • Only one VPN can run at a time. Turning on another VPN stops EZOBLOCKER.

The limits page covers these points in full. A filter helps, and a conversation with a child about what they may run into helps more.

How can I check that it works?

Run the protection check on the phone. It tries a normal address and one address per category. If the adult test address doesn't open while the normal one does, the category is blocking on your connection.

What does EZOBLOCKER know about the sites I visit?

No record of the sites you visit is kept on our servers. The Blocked screen lives only on the phone. Read the privacy page for what is and isn't collected.

Questions people ask

Is the Adult content category on by default?

No. Adult content is a category you switch on yourself. If you set up Family lock, a basic family filter that keeps adult and harmful sites blocked can also act as the fallback when our servers can't be reached.

Which lists does the Adult content category use?

HaGeZi NSFW, OISD NSFW and the Block List Project Porn list. The blocklists page shows the sources and the current domain count.

Can a child switch the category off?

Not without the PIN while Family lock is on. The PIN is asked when the app is opened, and turning protection off or changing categories needs it. Deleting the app removes the lock, and on iPhone the VPN can be turned off in Settings.

Does it filter images or text inside an allowed site?

No. DNS decides only whether an address loads. If an allowed app or site shows adult material inside its own feed, DNS can't separate it from the rest of the content.
