Frequently asked questions

Quick answers about how EZOBLOCKER works, what it can and cannot block, and how your data is handled.

EZOBLOCKER

Is EZOBLOCKER a VPN?

No. It uses the phone's VPN setting only to send DNS lookups to our servers. It doesn't hide your IP address or change your location, and your other traffic doesn't pass through us.

Does it block YouTube ads?

No. Video ads inside video apps come from the same address as the videos, so DNS can't block them without blocking the videos too. Ads on websites and in many apps that load from ad servers on our lists are blocked.

Will it slow down my internet?

Only the small DNS lookup goes to our servers. Pages and videos load directly from their own servers, and a blocked ad does not load.

Can I block or allow a site myself?

Yes. With My list you can block or allow any domain, on top of the categories.

Do you see which sites I visit?

Lookups are checked against the lists and then forgotten. We keep no DNS query logs, and the Blocked screen lives only on your phone.

Ad blocker app for iPhone and Android: block ads on your phone with DNS

Which list does EZOBLOCKER use to block ads?

The Ads category uses the HaGeZi Multi PRO list. Our servers refresh the lists every 6 hours, and the blocklists page shows the sources and the current number of domains.

Does it block ads inside YouTube videos?

No. Video ads inside video apps come from the same address as the videos, so DNS can't separate them. Ads on websites and in many apps that load from ad servers on our lists are blocked.

Do I need a browser extension?

No. EZOBLOCKER works at the DNS level for the whole phone, so you don't install anything in each browser.

What if a site breaks because of ad blocking?

Open the Blocked screen, find the address and tap Open, or add it to the Allowed list in My list. You can also use Pause for a few minutes or switch the Ads category off.

How to block adult content and porn sites on your phone

Is the Adult content category on by default?

No. Adult content is a category you switch on yourself. If you set up Family lock, a basic family filter that keeps adult and harmful sites blocked can also act as the fallback when our servers can't be reached.

Which lists does the Adult content category use?

HaGeZi NSFW, OISD NSFW and the Block List Project Porn list. The blocklists page shows the sources and the current domain count.

Can a child switch the category off?

Not without the PIN while Family lock is on. The PIN is asked when the app is opened, and turning protection off or changing categories needs it. Deleting the app removes the lock, and on iPhone the VPN can be turned off in Settings.

Does it filter images or text inside an allowed site?

No. DNS decides only whether an address loads. If an allowed app or site shows adult material inside its own feed, DNS can't separate it from the rest of the content.

DNS changer for iPhone and Android: secure, filtered DNS

Is a DNS changer the same as a VPN?

No. EZOBLOCKER uses the phone's VPN setting only to catch DNS lookups and send them to our servers. It does not hide your IP address or change your location, and pages, videos and messages do not pass through us.

Can I use Cloudflare Family or Quad9 inside EZOBLOCKER?

Yes. Under Advanced, then DNS provider, you can pick Cloudflare Family, AdGuard Family, OpenDNS FamilyShield, Cloudflare, Google Public DNS, OpenDNS, Quad9, AdGuard DNS, NextDNS or a custom address. While another provider is selected, EZOBLOCKER's own categories are off.

Why does EZOBLOCKER warn me when I pick another DNS provider?

Your lookups then go directly to that provider, so EZOBLOCKER's categories, My list and bypass blocking do not apply, and the provider's privacy policy covers your lookups. The app shows that the filters are off and gives you a button to return.

Do I need to change any setting on my phone by hand?

No. The app sets up the connection for you. On Android, check that the phone's own Private DNS setting is Off or Automatic, because a fixed Private DNS address overrides the filter.

How to block gambling sites and betting sites on your phone

Is the Gambling category on by default?

No. Gambling is one of the categories you switch on yourself in the app. Once it is on, the change takes effect in about 30 seconds.

Which lists does the Gambling category use?

HaGeZi Gambling, the gambling-only list from StevenBlack Hosts and the Block List Project Gambling list. The blocklists page shows the sources and the current domain count.

Can I block one more betting site that isn't on the list?

Yes. Add the address to the Blocked list in My list, up to 250 addresses. Subdomains follow the same rule, so adding example.com also covers www.example.com.

Can I make it harder to switch the category off?

Yes. Family lock puts the app's settings behind a 6-digit PIN. If you want that extra step for yourself, you can ask someone you trust to set the PIN so you don't know it. It adds friction, and it isn't a wall.

What DNS can't block

Why do I still see some ads with EZOBLOCKER on?

EZOBLOCKER blocks ads that come from a separate ad address on our lists. Video ads in video apps, sponsored posts in social apps and some in-game or in-app ads come from the same address as the content, and blocking them would break the app too.

Does EZOBLOCKER hide my IP address or location?

No. It uses the phone's VPN setting only to send DNS lookups to our servers. Your IP address and location are unchanged, and your other traffic doesn't pass through us.

Does Android's Private DNS setting affect the filter?

Yes. When Private DNS holds a specific address, Android sends the lookups there and EZOBLOCKER doesn't see them, so nothing is filtered. Set it to Off or Automatic. The app warns you under Advanced if it needs fixing.

Can I run EZOBLOCKER together with another VPN?

A phone runs only one VPN at a time. If you turn on another VPN, EZOBLOCKER stops until you turn it back on.

Parental control app for your child's phone, built on DNS

What is Family lock?

Family lock is a 6-digit PIN that keeps EZOBLOCKER's settings in the parent's hands. While it is on, turning protection off or changing categories needs the PIN. The PIN is asked when the app is opened.

What happens if the filter can't reach your servers?

During setup the parent chooses one of three behaviors: continue with a basic family filter that keeps adult and harmful sites blocked, cut off the internet for up to 12 hours and then continue with the basic filter, or continue unfiltered.

Can my child delete the app or turn off the VPN?

Deleting the app removes the lock. On iPhone the VPN can be turned off in Settings, and Screen Time can stop the app from being deleted. On Android, Always-on VPN brings protection back by itself and can be turned off only in the phone's VPN settings.

Can I see what my child visits?

No. The Blocked screen lives only on the phone it runs on, and our servers keep no record of the sites visited. EZOBLOCKER is a filter, not a monitoring tool.

Privacy: what EZOBLOCKER collects, and what it doesn't

Does EZOBLOCKER log the sites I visit?

No. No record of the sites you visit is kept on our servers, and the DNS server has its query log switched off. The Blocked screen is stored only on your phone.

Do I need an account to use EZOBLOCKER?

No. The app registers your device anonymously, with no email and no sign-up. Signing in with a Merasus ID is optional and is used for subscriptions.

What does your server know about me?

An anonymous device ID, your phone type, the app version, the categories you chose, the addresses in My list and your subscription status. If you send feedback, we also receive what you write plus diagnostic info, which you can switch off.

Can I delete my data?

Yes. In the app, under Privacy, Delete my data removes your device number, your choices and the settings on that phone.

How to block phishing sites and malware sites on your phone

Which lists does the Security category use?

HaGeZi Threat Intelligence Feeds, URLhaus from abuse.ch, the Block List Project Phishing list and the Block List Project Malware list. Our servers refresh them every 6 hours.

Does EZOBLOCKER scan my phone for threats?

No. It doesn't scan your phone, apps or files. It checks the address your phone is about to look up against the harmful and fake sites on our lists and stops matching ones before they load.

Can it stop a phishing link that arrives by SMS or email?

If the address in the link is on our lists, the page doesn't load when you tap it. A brand-new phishing address may not be listed yet, so keep checking links before you enter passwords or card details.

What if a safe site is blocked by mistake?

Open the Blocked screen, find the address and tap Open, or add it to the Allowed list in My list. Report it through Feedback in the app and we will take a look.

How to set Private DNS on Android

Does Private DNS slow my phone down?

This guide makes no speed claim. Private DNS only changes which server answers your DNS lookups and adds encryption to that step. Results depend on the provider and your network.

Which Private DNS setting should I use with EZOBLOCKER?

Off or Automatic. If a hostname is typed in Private DNS, Android sends every DNS lookup straight to that server and EZOBLOCKER does not see it, so its categories cannot filter anything.

Can I type an IP address into Private DNS?

No. Android's Private DNS field takes a hostname, for example family.cloudflare-dns.com, not an IP address.

Where is Private DNS on my phone?

On stock Android it is under Settings > Network & internet > Private DNS. Samsung and Xiaomi put it elsewhere, and menu names differ by model and version, so search for Private DNS in Settings if you cannot find it.

How to change DNS on iPhone

Can I change DNS on iPhone for mobile data?

Not with the manual DNS setting, which exists only for Wi-Fi networks. To cover mobile data you need an app or a configuration profile that sets DNS for the whole device.

Why does my iPhone show a VPN icon with EZOBLOCKER?

The iPhone only lets an app catch DNS lookups through its VPN feature. EZOBLOCKER uses it for that and for nothing else: your pages, messages and videos do not go through its servers.

How do I turn EZOBLOCKER off on iPhone?

Turn protection off from the app's home screen or in the iPhone's VPN settings. Menu names can differ by iOS version.

Is manual DNS on iPhone encrypted?

No. The manual setting takes plain IP addresses, so lookups are sent unencrypted. Encrypted DNS (DoH or DoT) needs an app or a configuration profile.

Family DNS servers and public DNS providers

What is a family DNS server?

A DNS server that answers with a blocked result for adult and harmful sites. Cloudflare Family, AdGuard Family and OpenDNS FamilyShield are examples that are listed in EZOBLOCKER.

Do EZOBLOCKER's categories still work if I choose a public provider?

No. In that mode your lookups go to the provider you picked, and EZOBLOCKER's categories, My list and daily blocked counts do not apply. The app says so on the screen. Choose EZOBLOCKER again to bring them back.

What happens if the provider I picked stops responding?

There is no silent backup. Lookups can fail and the app warns that the internet may not work. One tap on the home screen returns you to EZOBLOCKER.

Can I use the Family lock with another provider?

While Family lock is on, only EZOBLOCKER is used. To pick another provider, turn Family lock off first.

What is DNS?

What does DNS stand for?

Domain Name System. It is the system that maps site names to the numeric addresses computers use to reach each other.

Is DNS the same as a VPN?

No. DNS only answers the question 'what is the address of this name?'. A VPN sends your whole connection through another server. EZOBLOCKER uses the phone's VPN feature only to catch the DNS lookups, so the rest of your traffic does not go through its servers.

Who is my DNS server by default?

Usually the one your internet provider or router hands out when you join the network. You can change it, which is what a DNS changer app or a system setting does.

Can DNS filtering remove ads completely?

No. It blocks ads that are served from a separate address on its list. Ads served from the same address as the content, such as YouTube video ads, cannot be separated this way.

What is DNS over HTTPS (DoH)?

What is the difference between DoH and DoT?

Both encrypt DNS. DNS over TLS (DoT) uses its own dedicated port, while DNS over HTTPS (DoH) travels as ordinary HTTPS on port 443. Android's Private DNS setting uses DoT. EZOBLOCKER uses DoH.

Does DoH hide which sites I visit?

It hides the DNS questions from the network between you and the DNS server. The DNS server itself still receives them. EZOBLOCKER keeps no record of the sites you visit on its servers.

Do I need to set anything up to use DoH with EZOBLOCKER?

No. Turn protection on and the app sends the lookups over DoH. You only enter a DoH address if you choose a custom provider under Advanced > DNS provider.

Is DoH a VPN?

No. DoH protects only the DNS lookups. EZOBLOCKER uses the phone's VPN feature just to catch those lookups, and the rest of your traffic does not go through its servers.
